How to download Twitch clips, landscape or vertical
Where Twitch lets you download a clip, which clips you can download, and how to get a vertical version with captions for TikTok, YouTube Shorts and Reels.
Twitch saves clips in two shapes: the landscape original and, once it has been made, a portrait (9:16) version for phones. Who can download them depends on whose channel the clip is of and who made it. Here is how it works, step by step.
Clips of your own channel
- Open your Clips Manager: Creator Dashboard, then Content, then Clips.
- Find the clip. You can search by title or category and filter by who clipped it, the date or featured clips.
- Open its Share menu and choose Download, then pick the landscape or the portrait version.
This works for every clip of your channel, including the ones your viewers and Twitch's Auto Clips made. From the same menu you can post a clip straight to TikTok, YouTube, Instagram or Snapchat.
Clips you made of someone else's channel
In your Clips Manager, the list of clips you created includes clips of other channels. You can download the landscape or portrait version of any clip you made. Posting it straight to social media from Twitch works only if that streamer has allowed it in their settings.
Clips other people made of other channels
Twitch has no download button for these. You can share the clip's link, which plays on Twitch. If you want to use the clip in a video of your own, ask the streamer: the content is theirs, and many streamers are glad to share clips with clippers who credit them, or run clipping campaigns that give permission. Read how clipping campaigns work for how that usually goes.
When there is no portrait version
If only the landscape version is offered, the portrait one has not been made yet. Open the clip in the Clips Manager, choose Edit (the scissors), then Edit Layout, change or confirm the layout (Stacked puts your cam above the gameplay, Full uses one box), then apply and save. After a minute the portrait version can be downloaded. Twitch remembers that layout for later clips of your channel.
Clips are up to 60 seconds long. Captions come with clips made by "Twitch, Clip That" and with Auto Clips, and with other clips when the streamer has turned captions on in their Clips Settings.
A vertical version with captions, free
If you want a vertical clip with captions styled for shorts, an SRT captions file to edit, or the same for a Kick clip, EasyClippers does it from the clip's link, free on every account:
- Create a free EasyClippers account and open the Clips page.
- Paste the Twitch or Kick clip link.
- Get it back vertical, with captions and framing, plus the original clip in HD and its SRT file to download.
You can paste up to 20 clip links a day. Before you post, check that the captions sit clear of the apps' buttons with the free safe zone checker. Looking for the moments worth clipping in a past broadcast? The free Twitch VOD moment finder shows where viewers pressed Clip, ranked.
Questions
- Can I download a whole Twitch VOD?
- Streamers can download their own past broadcasts from the Video Producer page while Twitch still keeps them. See turning a Twitch VOD into Shorts for getting clips out of one.
- Why can I not edit a clip I made anymore?
- Once the channel owner edits, features or exports a clip of their channel, the viewer who made it can no longer change it.
- Is the download free?
- Yes. Downloading from the Clips Manager is free on Twitch, and vertical clips from links are free on every EasyClippers account.
- What happened to the channel name on clips?
- Twitch removed the channel name overlay. When a clip is posted straight to TikTok, Instagram or Snapchat, Twitch adds the channel name as a hashtag instead.
